The 36.5km Townsville City Council Haughton Pipeline Duplication Project is funded by Queensland Government to improve water security for Townsville.
The $215 million project will improve water security for Townsville and is providing a strong employment boost for north Queensland. Stage 1 of the 1.8m diameter Glass Reinforced Polymer (GROP) pipeline will pump water from the Upper Haughton Irrigation Channel into Townsville’s Ross Dam water supply. As Project Managers, Premise is working with design engineers GHD, SMEC as the Owners Engineer and more recently AECOM as the Construction Superintendent / Principal’s Representative and Townsville City Council.
Among the varied undertakings necessary as Project Managers, Premise has managed the preparation and issue of Expression of Interest for four pipe installation packages, preparation and release of seven construction and three pipe supply tenders, supervision of civil works contract and negotiation of the land access and easement agreements. Premise also planned and hosted two industry briefings which provided the information for the potential contractors to be part of the largest construction project currently underway in north Queensland.
Civil works on ground commenced in August 2018, with Premise engaged as the Construction Superintendent. Pipelaying contractors started in November 2018. Following Townsville’s unprecedented monsoon event in February this year, completion is now forecast for March 2020.
The pipeline is a key component of Townsville City Council’s 3-point water security solution which includes the new 1.8 metre diameter pipeline, a recycled water re-use scheme for public greenspace and industrial land and a Water Smart Package for helping residents transition to wiser water use. The project highlights what can be achieved when organisations and governments work collaboratively together.
