Former Townsville General Hospital Redevelopment

The redevelopment of the former Townsville General Hospital was a major project, which required partnering with numerous clients to deliver multifaceted outcomes.

Premise was commissioned to provide detailed design, works supervision, contract administration, and project management services for the construction of a 14 metre elevated development.

The project required innovative and creative engineering solutions, working within feasibility constraints, heritage listing restrictions, and market demand.

The embankment material was sourced on-site through the demolition of pre-existing concrete buildings, to create the largest reinforced earth wall in the Southern Hemisphere.

An $18 million multilevel apartment complex was also developed on the site. These apartments were built in proximity to existing buildings, which presented challenging geotechnical conditions.

The existing Block A building on-site was to be kept and refurbished to provide luxury apartments. Premise provided a multi-staged scope of works to ensure the redevelopment met current standards, and maintained the heritage aspects of the building.

Premise was engaged to provide civil and structural design services. Major issues encountered and solved by Premise to successfully deliver the project include:

  • Development of heritage listed buildings
  • Extremely variable founding material, from hard rock to soft sands
  • High wind loads
  • Proximity of the Stanton Centre (formerly the Oncology Building)
  • An entrance of a major state road
